Mobile Number Locator Application for Java Mobiles

Here are a couple of Java Applications that help you to trace or locate mobile numbers to identify which state and mobile operator they are calling from. Direct download Links are provided.

Shaplus Mobile Info
Just enter the number to be checked (or just the first 5 digits of the number, that will do), and the program will display the Region and the Operator that the unknown number is using. There is no need for a GPRS connection as this is a completely offline app. The only requirement is that your handset should support the installing of Java applications.

Mobile Number Locator
Another application serving the same purpose. Mobile number locator is also an offline app and allows you to check STD codes, ISD codes, and locate mobile numbers.

Applications to Backup your Phone Book and other Important Data

The contact list is the single most important component of your phone if you have to deal with a lot of calls daily. Therefore it is a good idea to regularly back it up in case you lose all your contacts in some freak accident.
I recommend backing up not just your contacts but the entire phone (including applications if possible). But a computer need not be always available for this task. Therefore, check out these apps that will make your life easier by backing up your phonebook, and in some cases, other stuff too.

1. MobileBackup

Mobile Backup is a nifty little tool to Back up Mobile Contacts. It is free too.

MobileBackup can :

* Backup contacts, calendar, tasks to a human-readable text file
* Restore contacts, calendar, tasks from the text file
* Runs on most mobile phones (should support JSR-75 though)(
* Most characters supported (uses UTF-8 file encoding)

2. Bup Backup

Now here is a slightly more advanced backup tool. It goes the extra mile and backs up not only the contacts but the phone files as well.
Here's the complete list of features :

* Backup mobile contacts and send to your email (as vCard).
* Send all mobile photos to your email with one click (Bup remembers what photos have been sent and only sends the new photos each time you run it).
* Each time you backup, Bup remembers what contacts are already backed up and only send the latest changes - making it one of the fastest backup products. Bup also restores contacts to your new phone.
* Bup uses a secure encrypted SSL connection for your mobile contacts.
* After you use Bup from your phone, you can login to the website (http://www.bupmobile.com) using your phone number and the PIN you selected. On the website you can upload or download contacts and change settings.
* If you lose your phone, login to the web site and click the "kill switch" under Account/Preferences - this will stop anyone else from downloading your contacts from your phone.

Bup used to be paid software but now it is available for free download.

Mobile Java Applications to Send FREE SMS

There are numerous sites on the internet that allow you to send Free SMS online. When you are running low on credit and have GRPS access, you can just load up any of these and zap a quick message to your mates. Most of these sites have WAP versions, making the process a whole lot easier.

However, it is easier to just install a Java application to do the same as it can save you the hassle of actually visiting the said website, logging in, etc.. a lot of unnecessary clicks there.

There must be many Java apps for this purpose, but I'm listing three popular ones here that I could find out:

1. 160by2 : This used to be one of my favorite websites to visit and send a quick one, due to the simplicity of the site. Now they have a J2ME app that you can install to send free SMS over a GPRS connection.

2. FullOnSMS : Another website that hjas been providing Free SMS for quite some time now.

3. GoText : GoText is a simple and lightweight Java app that lets mobile users send free SMS messages. You dont need a fancy phone, the official blurb says; You just need a handset that supports Java applications and a working GPRS connection.
