Direct download Links are provided.

Shaplus Mobile Info
Just enter the number to be checked (or just the first 5 digits of the number, that will do), and the program will display the Region and the Operator that the unknown number is using. There is no need for a GPRS connection as this is a completely offline app. The only requirement is that your handset should support the installing of Java applications.

Mobile Number Locator
Another application serving the same purpose. Mobile number locator is also an offline app and allows you to check STD codes, ISD codes, and locate mobile numbers.
Therefore it is a good idea to regularly back it up in case you lose all your contacts in some freak accident.
I recommend backing up not just your contacts but the entire phone (including applications if possible). But a computer need not be always available for this task. Therefore, check out these apps that will make your life easier by backing up your phonebook, and in some cases, other stuff too.

1. MobileBackup

Mobile Backup is a nifty little tool to Back up Mobile Contacts. It is free too.

MobileBackup can :

* Backup contacts, calendar, tasks to a human-readable text file
* Restore contacts, calendar, tasks from the text file
* Runs on most mobile phones (should support JSR-75 though)(
* Most characters supported (uses UTF-8 file encoding)

Download MobileBackup here

2. Bup Backup

Now here is a slightly more advanced backup tool. It goes the extra mile and backs up not only the contacts but the phone files as well.
Here's the complete list of features :

* Backup mobile contacts and send to your email (as vCard).
* Send all mobile photos to your email with one click (Bup remembers what photos have been sent and only sends the new photos each time you run it).
* Each time you backup, Bup remembers what contacts are already backed up and only send the latest changes - making it one of the fastest backup products. Bup also restores contacts to your new phone.
* Bup uses a secure encrypted SSL connection for your mobile contacts.
* After you use Bup from your phone, you can login to the website (http://www.bupmobile.com) using your phone number and the PIN you selected. On the website you can upload or download contacts and change settings.
* If you lose your phone, login to the web site and click the "kill switch" under Account/Preferences - this will stop anyone else from downloading your contacts from your phone.

Bup used to be paid software but now it is available for free download.

There are numerous sites on the internet that allow you to send Free SMS online. When you are running low on credit and have GRPS access, you can just load up any of these and zap a quick message to your mates. Most of these sites have WAP versions, making the process a whole lot easier.

However, it is easier to just install a Java application to do the same as it can save you the hassle of actually visiting the said website, logging in, etc.. a lot of unnecessary clicks there.

There must be many Java apps for this purpose, but I'm listing three popular ones here that I could find out:

1. 160by2 : This used to be one of my favorite websites to visit and send a quick one, due to the simplicity of the site. Now they have a J2ME app that you can install to send free SMS over a GPRS connection.

Download the 160by2 FREE SMS app Right Here.

2. FullOnSMS : Another website that hjas been providing Free SMS for quite some time now.

Download FullOnSMS FREE SMS app Right Here.

3. GoText : GoText is a simple and lightweight Java app that lets mobile users send free SMS messages. You dont need a fancy phone, the official blurb says; You just need a handset that supports Java applications and a working GPRS connection.

Just get this one.
I have tried out almost every single one of the chat apps out there for the Java platform and I can honestly say this one is the best.

Nimbuzz works with all the major IM networks, namely :
* Facebook
* Gtalk Messenger
* Yahoo Messenger,
* Live Messenger

Nimbuzz is available for Android, iOS, Blackberry, Symbian, Java, Windows and Mac. If you are a Java user, then this is probably your best bet.

One of the good things I noticed about Nimbuzz was that, when I used other IM apps to chat with mu buddies on facebook, after I exited those apps after my chat session, I remained logged in on facebook and marked as available, so a lot of my buddies kept sending me IM's and on seeing no reply, thought I was ignoring them. I know, it took some work to patch up those relationships, and I never used any of those apps again to chat on facebook. Thankfully, this problem doesn't arise with Nimbuzz, so I can safely chat on facebook again.

Ofcourse, the best feature of Nimbuzz is the ability to make FREE Calls. You can call your Nimbuzz buddies for free from within the app. While this is yet to be implemented in Java, you can enjoy it if your phone runs Symbian OS.

UC Web browser was kind of a late bloomer.
When you look at it, it's not as appealing or easy on the eyes as Opera Mini. The Homepage is cluttered with links and chinese letters and whatnot (with the exception of the Android Version, that one looks amazing). But you finally make up your mind to sit down and use it for a day, you are bound with it for the rest of your life.

The beauty of UC Browser is it's amazing usability. It is most suitable for a power user and the usability is equally great across all platforms. Some of the standard features include:

* Homepage Shortcuts
* Easily accessible Speed Dial shortcuts
* Multiple tab support
* Integrated File Manager
* Download Manager that is extremely fast in downloading. You can tweak download settings to increase speeds.
* Various themes. Night mode for reading with reduced brightness at night.
* Data Saving or Full Function Browse modes
* Save Pages for offline reading.
* A lot of shortcut keys. I LOVE the context menu (that can be accessed by just pressing '1'). Plus, if you're on a QWERTY handset, you get tons of shortcut keys to turbocharge your browsing sessions.
* Exhaustive list of preferences, that lets you change almost every aspect of browsing.

UC WEB has definitely improved. I remember first using it when it was a fugly little java application with chinese alphabets strewn all over the homepage that was also slow as hell to load. But now it's one of the first applications I install after a fresh reset of my phone (Be it my java phone, Symbian phone, or Android phone).
Gotta Love 'em!

I rarely use the official version of Opera Mini on my mobile phone. That is, since this one came along.

Opera Mini Mod is kind of an underground project by Russian Modders that took the classic version 2 Opera Mini app and added all kinds of bells and whistles to it.
The result? An extremely versatile and lightweight mobile browser app that lets you do almost everything, provided you know how to tweak it for each purpose.

Some of the features of the Opera Mini Mod include:

* Multiple tab support, long before the feature was introduced into official Opera mini.
* A powerful file manager that can also open most file formats and edit them.
* FTP Manager.
* Powerful download manager that supports resuming and downloading by lists.
* Backup/Restore Browsing Sessions
* Multi-Clipboard
* Save pages for offline reading.
* Custom Color Schemes, adjust, export, or import.
* Shadow Connection feature : this is required on some older Sony Ericsson handsets in which the GPRS connection is cut off if not used for sometime.
* Clear memory and cache manually.

The opera mini mod has a great set of features that it wouldn't be possible to list out all the features if I wanted. So you better download it and test it for yourself. If you are on an older phone I definitely recommend this one.

Opera Mini is the best looking internet browser for Java mobile phones out there, hands down. It's been there right from the old days when mobile internet was in its infancy, that even now when we think 'mobile browser', we think Opera Mini.

So, why should you use Opera Mini? Let's find out:

* View Web Pages in their full glory. Web Pages are reproduced for the mobile screen faithfully,
* High degree of data compression, save on your data costs.
* Good Social Web integration.
* Opera Link lets you synchronize bookmarks across various platforms.
* Speed dials on the start page to let you visit your favorite pages with ease.
* Provision for saving pages so that they can read offline later.
* Standard browser features such as Bookmarks, History, Download Manager, etc. A "find in page" option that is not such a big deal, but is still missing in some of the competitors.

Quite an exhaustive feature set, and it should suffice for most normal users.
We'd like to see support for extensions in a future update, but that's definitely not a deal breaker as Opera Mini provides the smoothest browsing experience there is. And yes, the eye candy; Opera is definitely in a league of its own!
But still, Java Applications and mobiles supporting them will always have their significance. The mid-range mobile market is still going strong, and as long as they are in production, Java apps will always be in demand.

If you check search stats on Google, the keyword "Java Mobile applications" has ____ searches monthly. This shows that there is still a huge demand for Java Games and Applications for the mobile market.

I, for instance, have got four mobile handsets in my arsenal at the moment; one of them an Android, one that supports Java apps (Nokia E5) and two that support Java apps exclusively (Sony Ericsson K800, Sony Ericsson K750). So I still scour the internet regularly for java apps.

Hence, this blog.

Here I will post about the best of the lot; the best Java applications I've used and continue to use after all these years. I'll link to the download pages wherever possible. Watch this space.
